What Makes a Society Just?

In a society, both the rulers and the people affect whether or not the society is just. In order for it to be just, the ruler needs to be considerate of the people opinions but not give in to things that would be unhealthy or bad for the community. The leader also needs to have the respect of the people which is hard to earn, and comes with being understanding, yet firm with his/her beliefs in what is right and wrong. The leader needs to do everything in power to help people in need and needs to know how to distribute money and resources. If everyone in the place where the leader is ruling is starving or living in poverty, then the leader is most likely not doing a very good job of governing. Of course, the ruler needs money to keep the government going also so he/she has to find a good balance between the two. This all contributes to how respected the leader is and also how satisfied and willing to obey the people will be.

Also the people need to be willing to cooperate with the government and work in unison to make a successful society. Because I believe that people are born good and are influenced by people around them, the majority of the people in a society need to want what's best for the community in order for it to thrive. This is because if more than half of the people in a society don't want this, they will influence people who do to become more like them and this will cause the society to fail. In a society, honor codes should be set up and enforced. If honor codes are not enforced people will not realize the difference between right and wrong and will therefore not understand why or how what they're doing is right vs. wrong. This will cause conflict between people and between the leader and the people.

  1. I agree because I think the ruler should have to follow certain guidelines to make sure he is ruling the society fairly. If he cannot do that, he should be thrown out of power for the good of society.

  2. I agree with legalism more, because while I believe that people are good, the pressure from society to have the most money or be the best at something makes people willing to do things that aren't good for society so they can reach that goal. For example, if someone doesn't have much money, the might be willing to steal in order to get the money they need or want. Therefore, we need punishments in order to give people incentive not to do that.
